Kaizer Chiefs are in talks to sign Nigerian goalkeeper Japhet Opubo as they urgently seek to fix their goalkeeping problems ahead of the 2025/2026 season, IsaGoal can report.
According to The South African, Kaizer Chiefs faced challenges last season with Bruce Bvuma, Brandon Petersen, and Fiacre Ntwari all struggling to secure the number one spot.
Head coach Nasreddine Nabi is focusing on bringing in a reliable goalkeeper to add much-needed stability to the team’s defence.
Fiacre Ntwari is now reportedly considering leaving Naturena, making the search for a strong replacement even more pressing for the club.
“Japhet Opubo is a top goalkeeper who has proven himself in Nigeria over the past few seasons and he could be a good addition at a big club like Kaizer Chiefs,” a source said.
Stanley Nwabali from Chippa United has been linked with Chiefs in the past, but new reports suggest Japhet Opubo is now a leading option.
“His representatives are assessing options for him. And there is a possibility that he can be offered to Chiefs,” the source added.
Opubo has built a strong reputation in Nigeria’s domestic league and is seen as a possible answer to Kaizer Chiefs’ defensive gaps.
With pre-season fast approaching, the club is expected to move quickly to secure their next goalkeeper.
Kaizer Chiefs’ search for new talent shows their commitment to improving the squad for the upcoming season.
