Barcelona are close to completing the signing of Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia, with the club confident about registering the player after finalizing financial guarantees.
According to Sport, the 24-year-old has agreed to join the Catalan giants on a five-year contract. Barcelona are preparing to activate his €25 million release clause at La Liga’s headquarters in Madrid next week, finalizing the move from their city rivals.
Club Provides Registration Guarantees
Garcia has reportedly received assurances about his role and registration. The goalkeeper, who shares agents with Dani Olmo, has been told he will arrive as the club’s number one and will be formally registered ahead of any other incoming transfers.
Barcelona estimate Garcia’s impact on their salary cap this season to be just over €10 million. This includes €5 million annually from the transfer fee and a gross salary of €6 million per year. The financial structure relies on amortizing the cost over the length of his contract.
Barcelona Expect to Operate Under ‘1:1 Rule’
The club expects their VIP seat lease plan to be approved by the end of June, enabling them to operate under La Liga’s ‘1:1 rule’. This would allow them to directly match outgoing savings with new spending, giving them greater flexibility for new signings.
Additional income from recent moves also supports Garcia’s registration. The club earned €6 million from Alex Valle’s transfer to Como, and Jean-Clair Todibo’s sell-on clause provides further funds. Ansu Fati’s exit to AS Monaco adds to the pool.
Garcia Will Be Registered Before Other Signings
Even if Barcelona fall outside the ‘1:1 rule’, they would still be allowed to spend up to 60% of their incoming funds. This scenario would still leave the club close to the total needed to register Garcia. According to the report, Barcelona have prioritized the goalkeeper’s registration ahead of any other new signings.
“He will be registered as soon as possible, and other potential signings would only be registered after Garcia,” the report states.
