Ilkay Gundogan Criticizes Ronald Araujo for Costly Mistake in Barcelona’s Champions League Match

In the recent Champions League showdown between Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, Ilkay Gundogan expressed his frustration with his teammate Ronald Araujo for a mistake that he believes cost Barcelona the match.

Barcelona, leading 3-2 from the first leg in Paris, seemed to be in control of the tie after Raphinha’s early goal at the Camp Nou on Tuesday night.

However, Barcelona’s game plan took a hit when Araujo was shown a straight red card in the 29th minute for a foul on Bardley Bacola near the edge of the box. The foul was deemed to have denied a clear goal-scoring opportunity.

PSG capitalized on their numerical advantage and went on to win the match 4-1, securing a 6-4 victory on aggregate, with Kylian Mbappe scoring two second-half goals to seal the tie.

Araujo argued that he was not the last man back and that his defensive partner, Pau Cubrasi, was covering. However, a VAR check supported the on-field decision.

Gundogan questioned Araujo’s decision-making at such a crucial moment in the game, stating that in such situations, it is essential to be sure when going for the ball.

Barcelona’s head coach, Xavi, who was also shown a red card in the second half, expressed his anger towards referee Istvan Kovacs and believed that the decision to send off Araujo “killed the game.”

Xavi emphasized that the tie could have been different if the red card had not been given.
