Genk Coach Torn Between Arokodare and Striker Deal

Genk’s decision to bench top scorer Tolu Arokodare sparks rumors of internal deals and transfer promises as pressure mounts ahead of the window’s close

Tolu Arokodare’s absence from Genk’s starting lineup continues to raise eyebrows, with a former Belgian youth coach suggesting there’s more going on behind the scenes — www.isagoal.com reports. Despite finishing last season as Genk’s top scorer, the Nigerian forward has watched from the bench in both league games this season.

Voetbalbelgie, quoting Het Belang van Limburg, shared comments from Jacky Mathijssen, who believes internal promises are shaping team selection. He questioned Genk’s choice to start Oh Hyeon-gyu instead of Arokodare in Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Antwerp.

“For a game against a deep defensive setup like Antwerp’s, Tolu would’ve been the better option,” Mathijssen said.

He added, “It’s no secret both strikers were given different guarantees — one got the promise of a transfer, the other a starting role.”

Thorsten Fink, Genk’s head coach, now faces pressure from fans and insiders alike, as he tries to balance expectations with results. Mathijssen summed it up plainly: “Fink is caught between performance and promises.”

Arokodare has been linked to several clubs this summer, but no move has materialized yet. With the window closing soon, Genk will need to decide quickly if they plan to keep or cash in on their leading scorer.
