Gareth Southgate, the former England manager, has reportedly applied to become the next head coach of Poland’s national football team. His interest in the role comes after stepping down as England boss in July 2024, following the Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain.
According to Przeglad Sportowy, Southgate has officially submitted his application to lead the Polish national team. Poland is currently in search of a new manager after Michal Probierz resigned last week.
Southgate’s time with England saw him guide the team to the 2018 World Cup semi-finals, the Euro 2020 final, the 2022 World Cup quarter-finals, and another European final in 2024. He was also mentioned as a possible candidate for the Manchester United job during the 2024-25 season but made it clear he was not planning a quick return to club football.
“I won’t coach in the next year for sure, I’m certain of that,” Southgate said in October. He also explained, “I need to give myself time to make good decisions. When you come out of a really big role you need to give your body time, you need to give your mind time.”
The Polish team faced internal challenges after Robert Lewandowski, Poland’s record goalscorer, refused to play under Probierz’s leadership. Lewandowski said, “Taking into account the circumstances and a loss of trust in the coach, I have decided to resign from playing for the Poland national team for as long as he remains in charge.”
Probierz later stepped down, saying his decision was best for the team moving forward.
