The Super Falcons’ pre-WAFCON 2024 build-up took a hit as the Nigeria vs Cameroon friendly match, initially set for Saturday, was cancelled due to the absence of the Cameroonian team.

IsaGoal learnt the Indomitable Lionesses failed to arrive on schedule, prompting the Nigeria Football Federation to announce the cancellation on the Super Falcons’ official X account late Friday.

The friendly match was slated to be played at Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Ogun State, as part of preparations for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco. However, Cameroon’s late arrival on Friday evening allowed no room for recovery or pre-match formalities, leading to the abrupt cancellation.

Organisers attributed the disruption to logistical setbacks and travel difficulties faced by the Cameroonian delegation.

With the Saturday fixture scrapped, only one match will now be played between the regional rivals. That rescheduled encounter is set for Monday, June 2, at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta.

“The most important thing is to stay focused and ready for the next challenge,” Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade said, setting the tone for what is now a single crucial pre-tournament outing.

This friendly was supposed to mark the Super Falcons’ return to international competition following a narrow 2-1 defeat to France last November. Nigeria’s team, which boasts nine WAFCON titles, remains unbeaten in reaching every semi-final since the tournament’s launch in 1991.

The Falcons will face Tunisia, Algeria, and Botswana in Group B of the 2024 WAFCON, taking place from July 5 to 26 in Morocco.
