Antony’s return to the English football spotlight ended in disappointment as Real Betis were beaten by Chelsea in the Europa Conference League final.

According to The Mirror, the Manchester United loanee was described as a “ghost” following an ineffective showing in the 2-1 defeat in Poland. Despite helping Betis reach the final with a key goal against Fiorentina, the winger failed to make an impact on the night.

Frank Leboeuf, speaking on ESPN, delivered a blunt assessment of the Brazilian’s display:

“It wasn’t his night. I saw the ghost that was playing for Manchester United. The only thing he did was pick fights with Enzo Fernandez.”

Antony’s struggles in England are well documented. Since his big-money move from Ajax to Old Trafford in 2022, he has largely failed to deliver consistent performances. The move to Spain has offered a lifeline, with the winger enjoying a more productive spell in La Liga and showing glimpses of the form that once made him such a coveted player.

But in a high-stakes clash against English opposition, Antony faltered again. Chelsea came from behind to lift the trophy, and the 24-year-old’s inability to influence proceedings reignited criticism over his suitability for English football.

Leboeuf added: “That guy has to avoid English football, that’s it. Don’t play against English teams and don’t play for any football club in England because it doesn’t suit him.”

United boss Ruben Amorim, when asked about Antony’s future, praised his loan spell but gave little away: “We see our players doing well on loan in a different context. That can happen and it’s a good sign for the club.”

Antony himself remained uncertain: “My work is playing and I’m doing that well. I have a lot of affection for Betis, for everyone, but I have a contract with Man United and I don’t know what’s going to happen.”

Despite his poor final, his overall contribution at Betis may attract suitors this summer. Whether a return to Old Trafford is on the cards remains unclear. What is certain, though, is that his latest outing against Chelsea has renewed doubts about his future in English football.
