Adrien Rabiot’s brace powered France to a 3-1 victory over Italy on Sunday, securing top spot in Nations League Group A2.
The midfielder scored two headers from Lucas Digne set-pieces to help France leapfrog Italy on goal difference and finish first in the group.
Both teams had already qualified for the quarter-finals before kick-off.
The match at the San Siro saw France take the lead early in the second half when Rabiot scored from a Digne free-kick.
Digne was again involved in the second goal, his stunning free-kick from 33 yards striking the woodwork and deflecting off Italy goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario into the net to give France a 2-0 advantage.
With Italy needing at least a draw to stay top, they responded quickly, with Andrea Cambiaso scoring a well-taken first-time finish to reduce the deficit just before halftime.
Despite Cambiaso’s goal, Italy remained on top of the group on head-to-head due to their 3-1 win over France in Paris earlier in the campaign.
The decisive moment came in the 65th minute when Digne once again provided the assist for Rabiot, who guided home his second header, restoring France’s two-goal advantage and ensuring they finished first in Group A2.
This victory set France up for a favorable draw in the Nations League quarter-finals.
