Nicolas Jackson has been hit with a two-game ban by FIFA after a reckless tackle in Chelsea’s Club World Cup defeat to Flamengo, IsaGoal can report.
According to the Daily Mail, Jackson was sent off only four minutes after coming on as a substitute during Chelsea’s 3-1 loss to the Brazilian side last week.
FIFA usually hand out a one-match ban for red cards at this tournament, but officials felt Jackson’s studs-up challenge deserved extra punishment.
The Chelsea forward will now miss their final group stage clash against ES Tunis in Philadelphia on Tuesday and a potential last-16 fixture against Bayern Munich or Benfica in Charlotte.
Jackson’s challenge on Ayrton Lucas was deemed dangerous by FIFA, who confirmed the decision is final and cannot be appealed.
Speaking after the match, Jackson said, “I am very sorry for the tackle. I apologised to Ayrton Lucas right away and accept the decision.”
Chelsea’s new signing Liam Delap shared his view on the incident, saying, “You have to stay aggressive, but I was right there when it happened — it was just so unlucky. He didn’t mean it. These things happen in football.”
Jackson’s red card is his second in just 40 days, following an earlier dismissal at Newcastle in May.
His absence now opens the door for Delap to step up and lead Chelsea’s attack in the coming games.
