Dutch-Nigerian defender Precious Ugwu has left Ajax and opened up about his international future, hinting at a possible switch to Nigeria, Isagoal can report.
In a recent TikTok Q&A, the 19-year-old said, “I can play for four countries, so we’ll see later in the future,”.
Born in Germany to a Nigerian father and a Bosnian mother, Ugwu recently joined Eredivisie side FC Volendam after over a decade with Ajax.
He was instrumental in helping the Netherlands win the UEFA U19 Championship, playing all five matches and helping secure three clean sheets.
While still committed to the Dutch youth setup, he hasn’t ruled out playing for Nigeria, especially with the Super Eagles actively scouting diaspora talents.
“My best Nigerian food is jollof rice and meat,” Ugwu said. “I am Igbo. I can’t speak fluently, but I understand a lot. I also have a Nigerian name — Uchechukwu.”
Eric Chelle, Nigeria’s head coach, is currently reinforcing the team’s defense ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Ugwu’s move to FC Volendam offers him more game time and visibility in top-flight football, potentially influencing his final national team decision.
“I had one year left at Ajax,” he explained. “They didn’t want to extend, so I had to look at other options.”
