Former Premier League referee David Coote has been charged by the Football Association after a video surfaced online showing him making offensive remarks about former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

According to the Football Association, Coote is facing accusations under FA Rule E3.1 for using abusive and insulting language.

In November 2024, the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) suspended the 42-year-old after the video appeared on social media. The video included inappropriate comments and references to Klopp’s nationality.

The Football Association described the incident as an “Aggravated Breach” under FA Rule E3.2 because the remarks involved discriminatory language.

An FA spokesperson said, “David Coote has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E3 in relation to comments that he made about Jurgen Klopp in a video recorded around July 2020 which appeared on social media in November 2024.”

The spokesperson added, “It’s further alleged that this constitutes an ‘Aggravated Breach’ under FA Rule E3.2, as it included a reference – whether express or implied – to nationality.”

The video was shared just days after Coote worked as the fourth official during Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Aston Villa at Anfield.

After the suspension, Coote was removed from his position as a Premier League match official in December 2024.

In February, UEFA banned Coote from officiating in European competitions until June 30, 2026.

The Football Association also confirmed that Coote will face no charges related to earlier gambling accusations.
