Erik ten Hag has been confirmed as the new manager of Bayer Leverkusen, stepping in to replace Xabi Alonso, who recently departed to take over at Real Madrid.

According to PA Media, the former Manchester United boss has signed a contract that runs until June 30, 2027. The announcement follows Alonso’s official move to Madrid, ending weeks of speculation around both roles.

Ten Hag had a mixed spell in charge at Old Trafford. He led United to League Cup success in 2023 and lifted the FA Cup in 2024. However, a poor start to the 2024/25 season resulted in his dismissal in October.

Before his Premier League stint, Ten Hag enjoyed success with Ajax, known for his tactical approach and player development. Now, the 54-year-old takes charge of the Bundesliga champions and aims to continue the upward trajectory established under Alonso.

“Bayer 04 are one of the best clubs in Germany and also among the top clubs in Europe,” said Ten Hag after his appointment. “The club offers outstanding conditions, I’ve been very impressed with the discussions of the management. I’ve come to Leverkusen to continue with the ambition shown in recent years.”

Leverkusen, who recently secured their first Bundesliga title, now look to a new era under Ten Hag’s leadership. The club hopes his experience at elite level football will guide them through both domestic and European challenges in the seasons ahead.
