Rute Cardoso, wife of Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota, has shared a heartbreaking tribute following his tragic death in a car crash in Spain, IsaGoal can report.
Jota, 28, and his brother Andre Silva died early Thursday morning in a fiery accident near Sanabria, as confirmed by local emergency services in the Castilla y León region, according to Marca.
Just days after celebrating their dream wedding in Porto on June 22, Rute mourned the man she had spent more than a decade loving.
“We said it would be until death tore us apart, today I say not even death can do that,” she wrote in a deeply moving message on social media.
In a 2019 post, Rute shared the couple’s journey from high school sweethearts to life partners:
“Seven years ago two kids, 15 and 16 years old, began their story… we’ve lived in three different countries, visited ten, and we’re still the same two kids! Happy!”
“We grew up together and we’ll grow old together too. Not even death can do that,” she added.
Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proenca also paid tribute:
“Much more than an amazing player… Diogo was an extraordinary person with infectious joy and a reference in the community.”
Jota, who recently helped Liverpool lift the Premier League title and won the Nations League with Portugal, spoke about fatherhood in one of his final interviews.
“When the baby was put in my arms for the first time… you can’t describe the feeling,” he said.
On parenting, he advised: “Patience is key.”
