In England’s impressive 2-0 win against the Republic of Ireland, Declan Rice seemed to have rejected the captain’s armband.
When Harry Kane was subbed off late in the game, he attempted to hand over the captain’s armband to Rice.
However, the Arsenal midfielder politely declined, suggesting that the armband should go to John Stones instead.
Rice downplayed the incident, emphasizing it wasn’t a big deal and that Stones, who is the vice-captain, was the appropriate choice.
Interim manager Lee Carsley echoed this, stating that Rice’s decision was out of respect for Stones’ seniority, adding, “I don’t think he refused it.”
Both Rice and Grealish faced a hostile reception from Irish fans, given their previous associations with the Republic of Ireland before switching to England.
While Grealish celebrated his goal enthusiastically, Rice took a more subdued approach, offering an apologetic gesture after scoring.
Rice later explained his reaction, saying, “My grandparents were Irish, and they’ve all passed away. I didn’t want to be disrespectful to them. I enjoyed my time playing for Ireland and felt it was important to show respect.”
