Thibaut Courtois has heaped praise on Trent Alexander-Arnold, describing him as “horrible” to face in training after the former Liverpool full-back registered his first assist for Real Madrid in a 1-0 win over Juventus at the FIFA Club World Cup.
Alexander-Arnold, who joined Madrid earlier this summer, delivered a trademark whipped cross to set up Gonzalo Garcia for the winner, helping Madrid advance to the semi-finals.
While the assist was his first official contribution, Courtois insists it came as no surprise.
“His kicking is amazing,” Courtois told DAZN. “His free-kicks, his corner kicks — they’re on another level. As a goalkeeper, sometimes it’s a nightmare.”
Courtois added that Alexander-Arnold’s pre-assist against Pachuca was another standout moment, calling his presence in training a daily challenge that improves both players.
Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso also praised the 25-year-old, noting his need for adjustment:
“Crossing is his trademark. He’s done 500 of those. He still needs time, but he’s an amazing player.”
Alexander-Arnold is expected to face competition from Dani Carvajal, who recently returned from a knee injury.
Carvajal, however, welcomed the rivalry.
“I love to compete,” Carvajal said. “Trent’s a great lad, he’s fit in really well. It’s a healthy challenge for both of us.”
The battle for Madrid’s right-back slot now promises to be one of the club’s most fascinating selection dilemmas as pre-season ramps up.
