Conor Gallagher could be set for a surprise return to the Premier League this summer—less than a year after leaving Chelsea for Atlético Madrid.
According to Mundo Deportivo, the 24-year-old midfielder, who joined Atleti in a £34 million deal last August, is attracting strong interest from Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur.
Despite a solid debut season in La Liga, Gallagher only started 50% of the club’s league matches and is not considered indispensable by manager Diego Simeone.
The report suggests Atlético are open to offloading Gallagher as part of a summer rebuild, viewing the England international as one of their more valuable assets.
With four years left on his contract, any sale would boost their finances as they also look to trim the wage bill—evidenced by the recent £20m agreement to sell Rodrigo De Paul to Inter Miami.
Newcastle are currently leading the race to sign Gallagher, but Spurs—long-term admirers of the midfielder—remain in the frame.
A return to the Premier League would see Gallagher face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge as an opposition player for the first time, potentially making for an emotional reunion with the club he joined at age 6.
Simeone remains an admirer of Gallagher’s qualities, saying earlier this year:
“He brings youth, energy, and intensity. He strikes the ball well, competes hard, and adapts—even in roles outside his comfort zone. There’s still growth in him.”
With Gallagher’s adaptability and engine, both Newcastle and Spurs see him as a perfect midfield fit.
But whether either club is willing to meet Atlético’s asking price remains to be seen.
