Melanie Leupolz, former Chelsea and Germany midfielder, has officially retired from professional football at the age of 31 after suffering two serious knee injuries in one season.
According to the Evening Standard, Leupolz sustained partial MCL tears in both January and March, which played a key role in her decision to step away from the game. The German star spent four successful years with Chelsea, winning the Women’s Super League in every season she played. She also lifted the FA Cup three times during her time under Emma Hayes.
Before joining Chelsea in 2020, Leupolz won back-to-back Frauen Bundesliga titles with Bayern Munich. In July 2024, she signed for Real Madrid and returned to face her former club in October when Chelsea defeated Los Blancos 3-2 in the Champions League group stage.
In a heartfelt farewell shared on her social media, Leupolz said: “After many intense and emotional years in professional football, I have made a difficult decision to retire this summer. Football has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember.”
Tributes from the football world have poured in. Chelsea captain Millie Bright praised her as “one of the best on and off the field,” while striker Sam Kerr said it was an “honour to have played with you, Melly.”
