Chelsea will be without forward Christopher Nkunku for their Premier League clash against Newcastle United at St James’ Park. The French attacker is expected to be sidelined for up to two weeks with a fitness issue that has already kept him out of recent games.
According to a report by NewcastleWorld, manager Enzo Maresca confirmed Nkunku’s absence following their Conference League semi-final trip to Sweden, saying: “Christo will be out for, I’m not sure, I think one week, two weeks. We are going to see. He will be out for the next 10 days, 15 days.”
Both Chelsea and Newcastle are tied on points and goal difference with just three games left in the Premier League season. Only goals scored separate the two teams in the race for a top-four finish and Champions League qualification.
Chelsea are coming off a 3-1 win over Liverpool, while Newcastle dropped points in a 1-1 draw away to Brighton. The Blues capitalized on the Magpies’ slip, narrowing the gap and intensifying the pressure ahead of Sunday’s showdown.
Newcastle could also be facing defensive concerns after Fabian Schar was substituted late in the Brighton game. While Kieran Trippier was taken off due to cramp, Schar’s issue remains uncertain, possibly indicating a muscle problem.
Head coach Eddie Howe commented after the match that Schar was limping and needed further assessment. The Swiss centre-back has been a regular starter, missing only a few games this season, mostly due to suspension.
Chelsea’s trip to Tyneside comes at a critical time, with both clubs eyeing a return to Europe’s top competition. With injuries on both sides, squad depth and match fitness could make all the difference.
