Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim believes captain Bruno Fernandes is prepared to stay at Old Trafford—if the club shows real signs of progress.
According to TNT Sports, Amorim has spoken openly about the need for change following United’s Europa League final defeat to Tottenham. The Red Devils ended a difficult campaign with a 1-0 loss in Dublin, concluding their season without a trophy and no European qualification.
Despite concerns that Fernandes may be sold to raise funds, Amorim is confident the midfielder remains committed—if he sees genuine improvements.
“It’s important for Bruno to see that we are changing a lot of things in our club—the behaviour, the everyday organisation, the pace of training,” Amorim told TNT Sports.
The Portuguese coach added that Fernandes’ loyalty isn’t based on the lure of Champions League football but on the club’s direction and standards.
“All these things, if he sees that we are doing that across all levels, he will want to stay at this club. He loves this club. That is the most important thing—not the Champions League. He wants to win with this club, and he trains and behaves at a high level. Everybody here needs to do that—he will be here for that.”
United’s Struggles Prompt Uncertainty
United’s 14th-place Premier League finish and 18 defeats have triggered concerns about a possible rebuild. While Fernandes has been linked with a move away, including reported interest from Saudi Arabia, he has said he’s not pushing to leave.
Speaking after the Europa League final, the 29-year-old addressed the speculation:
“I’ve always said I will be here until the club says to me that it’s time to go… If the club thinks it’s time to part ways because they want to do some cash in or whatever, it’s what it is, and football sometimes is like this.”
Amorim Demands Full Commitment
Amorim has already stressed the level of overhaul required, even going as far as saying he would walk away “without compensation” if United’s hierarchy no longer supported him. But he sees Fernandes as someone who can be at the core of rebuilding.
With the summer transfer window approaching, the coming weeks could define Fernandes’ future and the direction of the squad. Amorim’s message is clear: only genuine reform—not promises—will be enough to keep their captain.
