In their search for a new manager, Bayern Munich encountered a major stumbling block when Crystal Palace demanded a staggering £86 million in compensation for Oliver Glasner.
This astronomical fee, four times the previous record, effectively put an end to Bayern’s interest in the Crystal Palace boss.
Bayern Munich had been keen on securing Glasner as a replacement for Thomas Tuchel, who is set to depart at the end of the season.
However, their pursuit has been met with a series of rejections, with Xabi Alonso, Julian Nagelsmann, and Ralf Rangnick all turning down the opportunity.
Glasner, who has only been in charge at Crystal Palace for 12 games, emerged as a target for Bayern Munich.
The German newspaper Bild reported that Bayern were willing to pay approximately £15.5 million for his services.
However, Crystal Palace owner Steve Parish swiftly rejected this offer, insisting that Glasner honor his contract until 2026.
Despite the significant financial investment Bayern Munich has made in managerial compensation in the past, including a £21.4 million fee for Nagelsmann, the demand from Crystal Palace was unprecedented.
The highest amount ever paid for a manager was £21.5 million, when Chelsea secured the services of Graham Potter from Brighton.
Glasner has made a strong start at Crystal Palace, winning six of his first 12 games, including an impressive 4-0 victory over Manchester United.
However, his ambition to win the UEFA Champions League led him to consider the move to Bayern Munich.
Ultimately, the £86 million compensation fee proved to be a deterrent, and Glasner has accepted that he will remain at Crystal Palace until 2026, unless unforeseen circumstances arise.
