Bayern Munich have reportedly made contact with Liverpool over a potential move for in-form forward Cody Gakpo, who netted 18 goals in all competitions last season.
According to Sky Sports Germany, Bayern’s sporting director Max Eberl is a known admirer of Gakpo and has added the Dutch international to a shortlist of attacking targets that includes Rafael Leao and Kaoru Mitoma.
Liverpool Lead Race for Wirtz, Bayern Respond
Liverpool’s bold move for Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz has drawn attention across Europe. While Manchester City and Bayern Munich were initially the frontrunners, the Reds have jumped ahead with a firm offer, positioning themselves for what could be one of the biggest signings of the summer.
Wirtz’s potential arrival signals Liverpool’s aggressive intent in the transfer market under Arne Slot, following a title-winning campaign. The Premier League champions are also reportedly targeting Jeremie Frimpong, another Leverkusen standout, as a possible replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold.
When asked about the Wirtz links, Leverkusen’s sporting director Simon Rolfes confirmed interest, stating:
“There is concrete interest from Liverpool, but there’s no more to say right now. Florian is our player.”
Gakpo Thrives Under Slot’s Management
Cody Gakpo has flourished since Slot’s arrival, becoming a consistent figure in Liverpool’s front three. His 18 goals were crucial in Liverpool’s successful domestic campaign, and his manager hasn’t been shy about his admiration.
Earlier this year, Slot said:
“In the second half of last season Cody scored a lot of goals so he’s been a good player for Liverpool for a long time now. He continues doing that and that’s a good thing. For me, he is a regular starter.”
Gakpo’s form has not gone unnoticed. Former England international Joe Cole previously described the Dutchman as “excellent,” underlining the value he brings to Liverpool’s attack.
FSG Open to Offers Amid Wirtz Move
Despite Gakpo’s strong season, reports suggest that Liverpool and owners FSG may consider a sale if a suitable offer arrives. With Wirtz expected to bolster the attacking midfield, Gakpo’s future could be affected.
Bayern’s interest could now place Liverpool in a delicate position—juggling a high-profile arrival with the potential departure of a fan-favourite forward.
