Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi was rushed to the hospital for emergency abdominal surgery after suffering a serious injury during Sunday’s 2-2 draw against Leicester City at the City Ground.
According to Agence France-Presse, the Nigeria international collided with a post while trying to convert a cross from Anthony Elanga. Awoniyi attempted to continue playing after receiving several minutes of on-field treatment, but the full extent of the damage was only identified the following day by Forest’s medical staff. He was immediately taken in for surgery, which was confirmed to be non-life-threatening.
Following the incident, tensions escalated at full-time as Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis stormed onto the pitch, confronting manager Nuno Espirito Santo. Marinakis was reportedly frustrated that Awoniyi remained on the field despite the apparent seriousness of the injury.
“I was extremely concerned. He should have been taken off immediately,” Marinakis was quoted as saying.
The result leaves Forest’s Champions League hopes hanging by a thread. The team now sits seventh in the Premier League table, just one point behind the top five with two matches remaining — against West Ham and Chelsea. The top five teams qualify for next season’s Champions League.
Forest are, however, guaranteed a spot in the UEFA Conference League, marking their return to European competition for the first time since the 1995-96 season.
