Mikel Arteta has praised Tottenham Hotspur for their Europa League triumph, offering measured congratulations while declining to compare their season with Arsenal’s.

Spurs ended a 17-year wait for silverware by defeating Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final on Wednesday night in Bilbao, according to the Evening Standard. It also marked their first European title since 1984.

“They are champions, and when you get to that, you have to do a lot of things right,” said Arteta on Thursday. “I think they have gone through a season with a lot of obstacles and difficulties, and they have helped them at the end to manage a beautiful moment. So you have to congratulate.”

While Tottenham celebrated their European win, their domestic campaign tells a different story. With 21 defeats so far, it’s the club’s worst Premier League season in terms of losses. They currently sit 17th with just one fixture remaining.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have had a stronger league season and are second in the Premier League. They also reached the Champions League semi-finals, though they didn’t add any trophies to their cabinet this year. Their last major success came in 2020 with an FA Cup win.

When asked to weigh in on who had the better campaign, Arteta remained diplomatic. “I don’t like to compare with other teams. I need to analyse my team. That’s my job.”

While the rivalry between the north London clubs continues to spark fan debate, both sides have found vastly different forms of success this season.
