Manchester United have stepped into the race for Viktor Gyokeres, attempting to beat Arsenal to the Swedish striker’s signature as the transfer saga continues, Isagoal can report.
According to Record in Portugal, United approached Sporting CP with a higher bid than Arsenal’s initial offer of €63 million plus €10 million in add-ons, proposing a deal close to €80 million.
Despite United’s offer, Gyokeres reportedly remains focused on joining Arsenal and is not considering a move to Old Trafford at this stage.
The striker is currently in Mallorca, where he was seen with his agent Hasan Cetinkaya as discussions continue behind the scenes.
Correio da Manha reported that Cetinkaya traveled to Spain to explain the current delay in Arsenal’s negotiations and to brief his client on United’s proposal.
Sporting’s head coach, Ruben Amorim, may still try to personally contact Gyokeres, but A Bola suggests the forward has set his sights elsewhere, with a preference for clubs like Arsenal, Manchester City, and Real Madrid.
Sporting, meanwhile, are reviewing internal policies as Gyokeres missed the beginning of pre-season, which could result in fines if the absence continues.
Fans expressed their frustration during a friendly with Celtic, holding banners urging players to prioritize the club over personal ambitions.
In anticipation of Gyokeres’ exit, Sporting have begun talks with Almeria about Colombian striker Luis Suarez, whose €40 million release clause protects him until 2029.
