Ange Postecoglou Tipped for Scotland Job After Tottenham Exit

Ange Postecoglou is being considered as a possible successor to Steve Clarke for the Scotland national team manager role.

According to The Sun, the Australian coach became available after his departure from Tottenham Hotspur last Friday, despite leading the club to a Europa League victory.

Postecoglou’s time at Tottenham was challenging, with the club finishing just one place above the relegation zone after suffering 22 league defeats. However, his success in securing Spurs’ first trophy in 17 years, a memorable Europa League final win over Manchester United, has kept his reputation intact.

Postecoglou previously enjoyed a successful spell in Scotland with Celtic from 2021 to 2023. During his two-year tenure, he won five trophies, including back-to-back Scottish Premier League titles and a domestic Treble in his final season.

Scotland’s current manager, Steve Clarke, has just over a year left on his contract, which runs until the end of next year’s World Cup. Clarke, who has led Scotland since 2019, guided the team to Euro 2020 qualification — their first major tournament appearance since the 1998 World Cup — and secured a place at Euro 2024.

Former striker Ally McCoist shared his thoughts on Scotland’s future while speaking on talkSPORT. He believes Postecoglou would be a strong option if Clarke steps down.

“He’d do me absolutely. I wouldn’t have a problem with it at all. He wins things,” McCoist said.

McCoist praised Clarke’s contributions, particularly his efforts to lead Scotland through World Cup qualifiers against Denmark, Greece, and Belarus. “It’s a good group for us. We’ve got a good opportunity of doing well in the qualifiers, but moving on, if you’re asking me if I’d have a problem with Big Ange managing the national team? I wouldn’t have a problem at all,” he added.

The Tottenham decision to part ways with Postecoglou divided supporters. Some believed he deserved more time after securing a long-awaited European trophy. McCoist firmly supported Postecoglou, despite Tottenham’s poor league performance.

“I don’t think it was the right decision to get rid of Ange, to be honest with you. That’s the first thing I would say. I know the league position is unacceptable, I totally get that,” McCoist explained.

He continued: “But I felt he made it crystal clear that he threw all his eggs in one basket towards the end of the season, Jeff, in my opinion. I think he was unlucky with injuries as well. That said, the level of performance in the league was not good enough or anything like good enough. I understand that. However, the pluses for me far, far, outweigh the minuses.”

Postecoglou’s Europa League success has reportedly attracted interest from other teams. Brentford manager Thomas Frank is expected to take over at Tottenham.

Postecoglou’s previous success in Scotland, his trophy-winning experience, and his availability have made him a leading name for the potential Scotland vacancy.
