Andy Robertson says he’s staying focused on his game, even as Liverpool moves closer to signing Milos Kerkez as competition for the left-back position.
According to iNews, talks between Liverpool and Bournemouth over a deal for the 21-year-old Hungarian defender are ongoing. The Cherries are holding firm on a £45 million valuation, while Reds director of football Richard Hughes leads discussions from the Merseyside club.
Despite the uncertainty around his future, Robertson made it clear he has no intention of stepping aside quietly. With just a year left on his current deal, the 31-year-old Scotland captain remains confident in his ability to compete.
“I back myself, I’ve got confidence in my own ability and that drives me forward,” Robertson told BBC Scotland.
The Liverpool veteran acknowledged the possibility of a transfer but made it known that he’s not losing sleep over it. “We’re not daft, it looks as if a deal could potentially be done. But, until that is done, I’ve not even given that a second thought,” he added.
Kerkez Move Looms, But Robertson Ready for the Challenge
Liverpool’s pursuit of Kerkez has intensified, with new manager Arne Slot likely eyeing reinforcements as he builds his squad. The club sees Kerkez as a long-term solution at left-back, yet Robertson isn’t backing down from the challenge.
He stressed that age isn’t holding him back and pointed to his durability over the last season. “I’ve not missed a training session. That’s not a sign of someone who is slowing down,” he said.
The defender, who arrived at Liverpool in 2017, has been a mainstay during the club’s recent trophy-winning years. He reiterated his intention to make the most of the time he has left at Anfield.
“I’ve got a year left at Liverpool, I’m looking forward to pre-season. What the future holds after that? I’ve not given it too much thought,” Robertson said.
Slot Rebuild Continues as Transfer Talks Drag
While Kerkez is reportedly eager to make the switch, progress has been slow. Bournemouth’s sporting director Simon Francis is said to be driving a hard bargain. Even with optimism around a deal, both parties may need more time to reach a final agreement.
As the transfer window opens, Liverpool fans are closely watching how Arne Slot balances loyalty to proven players like Robertson with the push to bring in fresh talent.
