Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker has expressed his desire to extend his career at Anfield, turning down a lucrative opportunity to move to Saudi Arabia.
The 31-year-old Brazilian has been a vital part of Liverpool’s success since joining from Roma in the summer of 2018, making over 260 appearances for the club.
Alisson has been a cornerstone of the success Liverpool enjoyed under previous manager Jürgen Klopp.
As the club transitions into a new era under Arne Slot, Alisson aims to continue contributing to the team’s success.
He stated, “I want to honour my contract and finish my contract here or make a new one.” His current deal runs out in 2026, with Liverpool holding an option to extend it for another year.
Alisson explained his reasons for staying at Liverpool despite the tempting offers from Saudi Arabia.
“I am really happy here. My family is happy,” he said. “I never got to the point where I was talking about wages. It was just interest, but when you hear about the numbers the other players (in Saudi Arabia) are getting, you are a little bit attracted. That is normal.”
“This new beginning and this new start, I am really excited about that. We are starting fresh with new energy and looking forward to what this season will bring for us,” he added.
Liverpool has reportedly identified Georgia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili as a potential successor to Alisson.
Mamardashvili, who impressed at Euro 2024, has been linked with a move to Liverpool.
Addressing this, Alisson remarked, “I think the club needs to prepare for the future. We are not going to last forever here; I am getting old!”
