The move comes days after United secured Senne Lammens from Antwerp in a £21.7m deal, signaling a dramatic change between the posts.
According to Daily Mail Sport, United made it clear to the Cameroon international that they would not block him if he sought a transfer.
Trabzonspor entered discussions once their own goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir edged closer to a switch to Galatasaray.
Talks advanced quickly, and Onana is expected to seal the temporary move before Turkey’s transfer deadline closes on September 12.
The 29-year-old’s time at Old Trafford has been rocky, with high-profile mistakes undermining his role as first-choice goalkeeper.
His situation worsened after a hamstring injury in July ruled him out of pre-season preparations.
Onana then featured just once this campaign, conceding in United’s shock Carabao Cup loss to Grimsby Town.
Altay Bayindir has already started all of United’s Premier League matches, pushing Onana further down the pecking order.
