Eguavoen Warns Nduka’s National Team Future May Suffer in Iraq

Super Eagles technical director Austin Eguavoen reacts to Junior Nduka’s transfer to Iraq after the Remo Stars captain led his side to NPFL glory

Super Eagles B captain Junior Nduka has completed a move to Iraqi Stars League side Erbil FC after guiding Remo Stars to their first-ever NPFL title – www.isagoal.com reports.

The 22-year-old defender departs Nigeria after making over 130 appearances for the Sky Blue Stars across all competitions.

Nduka’s leadership stood out last season as he lifted the NPFL trophy under coach Daniel Ogunmodede, sealing a historic triumph for the club.

He also wore the armband for Nigeria’s home-based Super Eagles at the 2024 CHAN tournament, though the team failed to progress beyond the group stage.

Austin Eguavoen praised Nduka for taking his career abroad but raised concern about the timing of the transfer.

“First of all, I want to say congratulations to the boy, he is a very good player, no doubt about that,” said the Super Eagles Technical Director in an interview with Brila.

Eguavoen admitted the move was financially rewarding but felt the CAF Champions League with Remo Stars could have been a better platform to attract European interest.

“Life after football is very important, but you can’t compare the Iraqi league to the CAF Champions League,” Eguavoen added.

The former national coach also suggested that playing in Iraq might affect Nduka’s visibility for future national team invitations.

Despite that, he wished the young defender well and hinted that a strong showing in Iraq could still open doors to leagues like Saudi Arabia.
