Nigerian Midfielder Abiodun Rejoins Spirit Ahead of NWSL Run-In

Washington Spirit cut short Deborah Abiodun’s Dallas loan after her WAFCON heroics, leaving Trinity without their midfield anchor just before key fixtures

Washington Spirit have brought back Nigerian midfielder Deborah Abiodun from her loan at Dallas Trinity, ending her stay in Texas four months ahead of schedule – www.isagoal.com reports.

Soccernet.ng confirmed that both clubs reached an agreement as the Spirit prepare for a decisive stretch in the 2025 NWSL campaign.

The 21-year-old joined Dallas earlier this year and impressed with 12 appearances, including seven starts, while amassing more than 650 minutes on the pitch.

She played a full 90 minutes in Dallas Trinity’s 2-1 win over Spokane FC just last weekend.

Her recall comes only weeks after lifting the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations trophy with Nigeria, where she solidified her reputation as one of Africa’s top young midfielders.

Spirit interim general manager Nathan Minion praised the move, saying, “We’re thrilled to bring Deb back as we approach the home stretch of the season. She fits perfectly into our plans.”

Abiodun, who first rose to prominence at the University of Pittsburgh, also featured at the 2022 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, the 2023 Women’s World Cup, and the Paris 2024 Olympics.

She is expected to make her second Spirit debut on August 31 against Chicago Stars FC at Audi Field.
