Matt Le Tissier Tips Cyriel Dessers for SPFL Top Award

Matt Le Tissier has tipped Rangers forward Cyriel Dessers to challenge for the SPFL Player of the Year award after missing out on last season’s shortlist

Cyriel Dessers has received strong backing from former England international Matt Le Tissier, who believes the Rangers striker deserves recognition in Scotland — www.isagoal.com reports.

The Southampton legend expressed surprise that the Nigerian forward was overlooked for last season’s Player of the Year award despite finishing as top scorer.

Dessers netted 52 goals and added 14 assists across 115 matches since joining the Glasgow giants, underlining his impact in the Scottish Premiership.

Although he claimed the Golden Boot in the 2024/25 campaign, his name was absent from the nominees’ list, which was dominated by Celtic’s Callum McGregor, Daizen Maeda, Nicolas Kuhn, and Dundee’s Simon Murray.

The only Rangers representation came through youngster Hamza Igamane, who featured in the Young Player category.

“It’s usually the goal scorers that walk away with the trophies,” Le Tissier told Football Insider, adding, “Cyril Dessers is a decent finisher, and if he gets on a roll, he’ll be in the race for Player of the Season.”

The 30-year-old, however, is battling an ankle injury suffered against Viktoria Plzen, and his absence was felt in Rangers’ Champions League qualifier defeat to Club Brugge.

For now, questions remain over whether Dessers will stay at Ibrox beyond the transfer window.
