Barry Ferguson Open to Return After Rangers Manager Role

Barry Ferguson reflects on his intense Rangers spell, reveals offers from home and abroad, and shares why a return to the dugout might still be on the table

Barry Ferguson says stepping back into a managerial role isn’t off the cards just yet, IsaGoal can report.

The former Rangers and Scotland captain opened up on Go Radio about his time as interim manager and hinted that interest hasn’t been lacking since his exit.

According to BBC Sport, Ferguson was approached with job offers from clubs in Scotland, England, and overseas but turned them down, saying none felt like the right fit.

Despite a win rate that fell short of Philippe Clement’s record, Ferguson believes his run was solid, especially considering the squad’s condition when he stepped in.

“When I took the job, I knew the dressing room was in a rough place,” Ferguson said. “It was about lifting the players and giving them a spark.”

Alongside Neil McCann and Billy Dodds, Ferguson helped guide the club to the Europa League quarter-finals during a transitional phase under new American ownership.

He said the time on the touchline brought highs and lows, admitting, “We had some brilliant times and some difficult ones – the losses to Motherwell and Hibs really stung.”

Ferguson described his three-month stint as both intense and rewarding, calling it an opportunity he never thought would come his way.

The former midfielder is now set to resume his role as a club ambassador at Ibrox, feeling content with how he handled his return to the bench.

“I loved every minute,” he said. “I’m grateful I had that chance, but I’m also happy to step back and enjoy some peace again.”

He revealed that building his coaching staff wasn’t simple either, noting that picking Allan McGregor, McCann, and Dodds led to some heated debates behind the scenes.

“But that’s what I wanted – staff that weren’t afraid to challenge me,” Ferguson said. “And challenge me they did.”

While he’s taking time away from coaching for now, Ferguson has left the door wide open for what might come next.
