Lionel Messi continued his jaw-dropping goal streak on Saturday, scoring twice again to power Inter Miami to a 2-1 win over Nashville in Major League Soccer, IsaGoal can report.
The Argentine icon became the first player in MLS history to score two or more goals in five consecutive matches.
Messi opened the scoring in the 17th minute with a signature left-footed free-kick that curled perfectly through a narrow gap in Nashville’s wall, leaving goalkeeper Joe Willis no chance.
Although Miami controlled the first half, Hany Mukhtar headed in the equalizer for Nashville just four minutes into the second half.
But Messi delivered again in the 62nd minute, capitalizing on a mistake from Willis to slot in the winning goal and seal another vital three points for Miami.
Messi now boasts 16 goals in 16 appearances this season, tying him with Nashville’s Sam Surridge in the MLS Golden Boot race.
“There are not many words. It’s incredible what he keeps doing, breaking records now every three days,” said Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano. “He is the leader.”
Miami now sit fifth in the Eastern Conference with 38 points from 19 matches, just five points behind leaders Philadelphia, and with three games in hand.
The packed fixture list continues with matches against Cincinnati on Wednesday and New York Red Bulls next weekend.
Mascherano admitted the team will manage Messi’s minutes carefully, saying, “He is feeling good… when we think it is time to give him some rest, we will do it.”
