Jude Bellingham has been denied the chance to face younger brother Jobe Bellingham at the FIFA Club World Cup, after the Borussia Dortmund midfielder was suspended for the upcoming quarter-final clash against Real Madrid.
Jobe, 18, received his second yellow card of the tournament during Dortmund’s recent win over Monterrey, triggering an automatic one-match suspension.
According to FIFA rules, yellow cards are only cleared after the quarter-finals, meaning he’ll sit out the highly anticipated family reunion.
The match would have seen Jude and Jobe go head-to-head for the first time in a competitive fixture, with Real Madrid and Dortmund advancing past Juventus and Monterrey respectively.
Jobe, who joined Dortmund from Sunderland in a £16 million deal, has impressed early, netting his first goal in a 4-3 win against Mamelodi Sundowns.
He’s made four appearances so far in the tournament.
Dortmund manager Niko Kovac expressed sympathy after the match:
“He was disappointed. He didn’t realise at half-time the second yellow would mean suspension. But he’s young, his brother is young, they’ll meet again—maybe next season in the Champions League.”
Meanwhile, Jude Bellingham, 21, continues to shine for Real Madrid, scoring in the group stage against Pachuca and playing a pivotal role in the Spanish side’s progress.
Speaking earlier this year, Jude shared his dream of playing alongside Jobe for England, calling it the “biggest dream of his life.”
Though fans won’t get the Bellingham showdown just yet, all signs point to an eventual on-pitch meeting—if not as opponents, perhaps as teammates in national colours.
