Crystal Palace could lose their Europa League spot if Lyon succeed in their appeal against relegation from Ligue 1, IsaGoal can report.
UEFA postponed its decision this week on whether Palace will retain their Europa League place, earned by winning the FA Cup.
The issue stems from American billionaire John Textor’s ownership links to both clubs, raising concerns over multi-club ownership violations.
Textor, who held a 43% stake in Palace and also controls Lyon, attempted to fix the conflict by selling his Palace shares to New York Jets owner Woody Johnson for £190m.
However, he failed to offload his stake before UEFA’s strict 1 March deadline—while Palace were mid-table and far from European contention.
Palace argued that Textor’s influence was diluted due to a four-way voting structure and no resource-sharing with Lyon, but the CFCB was reportedly unconvinced.
Matters worsened when Lyon were officially relegated in June for breaching French financial regulations despite raising funds by selling players like Rayan Cherki to Manchester City for £34m.
Lyon’s appeal against their demotion is now critical. If successful, the French club—who finished sixth in Ligue 1—will be awarded the Europa League slot instead of Palace.
UEFA has until August 4 to resolve the dispute ahead of the Europa League playoff draw.
If the French football authorities delay the appeal ruling past that date, Palace will retain the Europa League position by default.
Until then, the South London club is stuck in European limbo.
