Aitana Bonmati, star midfielder for Barcelona and Spain, is currently recovering in the hospital after being diagnosed with viral meningitis just days before Euro 2025, IsaGoal can report.

Spanish outlet Sport confirmed that the reigning Ballon d’Or winner is being closely monitored by medical staff after falling ill ahead of Spain’s opening match against Portugal this Thursday.

Bonmati posted a heartfelt photo on social media showing her watching Spain’s friendly against Japan from her hospital bed, which immediately drew support from fans and fellow players across the world.

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) issued a statement revealing that Bonmati missed the Japan fixture due to her condition, which required urgent medical attention.

National team manager Montse Tome spoke calmly about the situation, saying, “Talking about meningitis can be scary but it is controlled. She is a very important player for us. We’ll wait for her as long as we can.”

Viral meningitis often clears with proper treatment and rest, but the timing is unfortunate as Spain enters the tournament with high expectations.
