Cristiano Ronaldo has officially ruled out any short-term move ahead of this summer’s FIFA Club World Cup, ending growing speculation about a potential return to Europe or a one-off deal.
According to talkSPORT, Ronaldo had received several offers from clubs hoping to add his star power to the tournament, including reported interest from teams in the Premier League and Brazil’s Fluminense. Even Chelsea were urged to make a move, with former midfielder John Obi Mikel publicly calling on the club’s ownership to take action.
Despite the attention, Ronaldo made it clear he will not be part of the upcoming tournament. “It’s almost decided that I will NOT take part at the FIFA Club World Cup despite receiving many invitations and proposals,” he said in a media interview while preparing for Portugal’s Nations League final against Spain. “There have been talks, contacts… but you have to think about short, medium and long term.”
Al Nassr Star Nearing Contract Expiry
The 40-year-old forward has just weeks remaining on his contract with Saudi side Al Nassr, a club he joined after his exit from Manchester United. While his future beyond this month remains uncertain, his comments put an end to rumors of a short-term switch for the newly formatted Club World Cup, which will be hosted in the United States.
The tournament’s revised structure had led to widespread speculation that big-name players such as Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, and Kylian Mbappe could feature for participating clubs. FIFA president Gianni Infantino even teased the idea during an unconventional livestream interview, saying, “There are discussions with some clubs… who knows, who knows.”
Al Nassr Working to Extend Ronaldo Deal
Although Ronaldo hinted at the end of his time in Saudi Arabia with a reflective post after the season’s conclusion, Al Nassr remains hopeful of securing a contract extension. The club’s sporting director, Fernando Hierro, recently addressed the ongoing talks.
“We are still in negotiations with Cristiano. Hopefully we can find a solution on a renewal,” Hierro said during a press briefing. “Cris is now with his national team… His contract runs until June 30th. We’ll continue working so that all parties can reach an understanding.”
He added, “There is a strong push from the entire country for him to stay and that will also be very important for him.”
Ronaldo’s current deal is reportedly worth €200 million annually. As it nears expiration, fans and clubs alike await clarity on what comes next for one of football’s most decorated figures.
