Liverpool are close to completing major moves for Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez, with a combined deal potentially worth £169 million. Both players are expected to join this summer as part of Arne Slot’s push to reshape the squad after their successful Premier League campaign.
According to Bild, Wirtz has agreed personal terms with Liverpool on a contract lasting until 2030. The final step remains negotiations between the clubs, with Bayer Leverkusen demanding a fee of up to €150 million (£127m).
The 21-year-old playmaker played a crucial role in Leverkusen’s unbeaten domestic season and is viewed as a marquee addition. Liverpool’s owners have reportedly approved the fee, paving the way for what could become the most expensive transfer in Premier League history.
On the defensive side, Liverpool are also nearing an agreement for Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez. Journalist Rudy Galetti reported that Liverpool are “taking the last steps” in finalising the deal for the Hungary international.
“The deal is almost sealed between Liverpool and Bournemouth for ~€50m plus performance-related bonuses as a final fee,” Galetti posted.
A five-year contract has already been agreed with Kerkez, who is expected to compete immediately for a starting role at left-back, an area where Liverpool struggled last season.
Early business shows intent under Arne Slot
The Reds have wasted no time in the transfer market. Having already secured Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen, they are pushing for a swift conclusion to negotiations with both Wirtz and Kerkez.
Liverpool’s early Champions League qualification provided them with clarity on their budget, allowing them to act faster than many rivals. The additions are part of a broader squad overhaul, with more players expected to follow.
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher stressed the need for multiple reinforcements, stating on The Overlap:
“Throughout the season, I was still saying that Liverpool still need five or six players… attacking midfield and left-back are the two areas that have jumped out to me in the last 12 to 18 months.”
Carragher believes both Wirtz and Kerkez will play significant roles immediately and hinted that the club may also be in the market for a striker.
More moves expected after initial trio
With Frimpong, Wirtz, and Kerkez nearly secured, Liverpool are expected to turn attention to a central forward. There is also speculation about potential exits, with players like Kostas Tsimikas likely to move on to make space for incoming signings.
Wirtz’s arrival could offer flexibility in midfield, while Kerkez is poised to add depth and quality to a position where Liverpool struggled due to inconsistent form and injuries.
If the fee for Wirtz is finalised at €150 million, it would surpass the Premier League record set by Chelsea for Enzo Fernandez in 2023, adding further significance to the move.
Liverpool’s transfer strategy reflects a desire to complete business early and give new players ample time to integrate ahead of the new season.
