Brentford are moving forward with plans to sign Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher as they prepare to sell their current starter, Mark Flekken, to Bayer Leverkusen. According to Fabrizio Romano and Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, the Bees are close to finalizing the deal for Flekken, with negotiations between the clubs well underway.
Reports reveal that Bayer Leverkusen is set to pay between €10 million and €14 million for Flekken, who is expected to become the new first-choice goalkeeper under the club’s incoming manager, Erik ten Hag. Plettenberg confirmed that Brentford have begun talks with Kelleher and Liverpool, with the 26-year-old goalkeeper seen as the ideal replacement for Flekken.
Kelleher’s transfer fee is notably lower than initially expected. Earlier reports suggested Liverpool wanted around £30 million for the player, but recent updates indicate the Reds have lowered their valuation to just over £20 million. This reduction is largely linked to Kelleher entering the final year of his contract and his desire to secure regular first-team football, which looks unlikely at Anfield given Alisson Becker remains Liverpool’s first-choice keeper and Giorgi Mamardashvili is joining as No. 2.
Kelleher’s performances this season have been impressive, including a crucial penalty save against Kylian Mbappe in Liverpool’s Champions League victory over Real Madrid. However, the contract situation has prompted Liverpool to adjust their asking price.
Brentford have a growing history of dealings with Liverpool, having signed Sepp van den Berg and Fabio Carvalho last summer. The addition of Kelleher would continue this trend and strengthen Brentford’s squad as they aim to improve their defensive record after conceding 57 goals in the Premier League last season.
