Marcus Rashford has been left out of England’s latest squad as head coach Thomas Tuchel made some bold choices ahead of the World Cup qualifier against Andorra and a friendly clash with Senegal.
According to Birmingham Live, Rashford, who is still working his way back from a hamstring issue, was not considered fit enough to feature despite returning to training with Aston Villa. His club teammate Ollie Watkins has earned a recall, rewarded for his sharp form following recovery from injury.
Ivan Toney also returns to international action. The striker, now playing for Saudi Pro League champions Al-Ahli, made a strong case with 29 goals in 43 appearances. “He’s scoring goals at a high level and that speaks volumes,” Tuchel said.
Trevoh Chalobah’s impressive campaign with Chelsea has earned him a first senior call-up. The defender, who came through England’s youth system, played 32 matches this season and has emerged as a reliable option in the back line.
In a few other changes, Phil Foden is absent as he focuses on his mental health after a tough domestic campaign. Jude Bellingham, despite concerns around a shoulder issue, is included and expected to be available.
There’s also good news for Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold and Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka, who return from injury, while Noni Madueke is called up for the first time under Tuchel. However, there’s no space for Dominic Solanke or Jarrod Bowen in this round.
England Squad:
- In: Watkins, Toney, Chalobah, Alexander-Arnold, Saka, Madueke
- Out: Rashford (injury), Foden (personal), Solanke, Bowen
England face Andorra on June 7, followed by a test against Senegal on June 10 at the City Ground.
