Manchester United faced a tough blow following their defeat by Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final, as the loss means no European football next season for the Red Devils.
According to a report, UEFA’s recent competition format changes have unexpectedly spared Manchester United from a difficult Champions League group-stage scenario.
The new UEFA structure replaces the traditional group stage with a league phase and alters how Europa League winners are seeded. Previously, Europa League champions would automatically be placed in Pot One for the Champions League draw, guaranteeing a more favorable group.
Now, the seeding depends on a team’s coefficient ranking instead, which could result in tougher draws.
This shift creates a challenging outlook for Tottenham, who despite their Europa League victory, will not benefit from the top-seed privilege. Instead, they face stronger opponents in the Champions League because of their lower coefficient. Meanwhile, Manchester United avoided this scenario due to their absence from Europe’s top-tier competition.
Tottenham’s manager Ruben Amorim, speaking after the 1-0 win, acknowledged the difficulty facing Manchester United but also highlighted the silver lining for his own side: “We have two plans even for the market and we need to understand that is tough for a club like us not to be in the Champions League. But we have to use the other side. So if we have more time, we have more time to think during the week and be better in the Premier League, that will be our focus.”
Despite missing out on Champions League qualification, Manchester United’s focus will now shift fully to the Premier League, with their season concluding against Aston Villa on Sunday.
