Berbatov compares Ledley King to top defenders

Tottenham Hotspur fans have long respected Ledley King for his ability on the pitch, but former striker Dimitar Berbatov has now placed him in elite company—alongside some of the Premier League’s most iconic defenders.

According to a report by FootballFanCast, Berbatov compared King directly to Manchester United legends Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidić. The Bulgarian forward, who played with all three during his career, described King as a rare talent capable of reading the game at the highest level.

“For me he was up there with [Nemanja] Vidic and Rio [Ferdinand]. He was so intelligent and read the game so well. He was always intercepting balls purely because he knew where the striker would be.”

Despite struggling with chronic knee problems throughout his career, King made 268 league appearances for Spurs and earned 21 caps for England. His former manager Harry Redknapp once explained that King’s condition forced him to skip training entirely and rely on recovery between matches.

King’s football IQ and positional sense won admiration from some of the best attackers in the game. Thierry Henry even called him the “only defender” in England who could take the ball off him “without you even noticing.”

Although he retired early due to his injury issues, King has remained involved with Tottenham, taking up a role as a club ambassador and previously working on the coaching staff under José Mourinho. His name continues to echo through the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, especially in the 26th minute—a tribute to his squad number and enduring legacy.
