France were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by Israel at the Stade de France on Thursday, with the hosts struggling to break down a resilient Israeli defense.

The match, played in front of just under 17,000 spectators in a stadium that can hold 80,000, was marked by tense moments both on and off the pitch.

Security was tight, with approximately 4,000 police and security personnel present to prevent incidents like last week’s attacks on Maccabi Tel Aviv fans in Amsterdam.

Tensions flared in the stands at one point, with stewards intervening to stop fans from both nations clashing.

Around 100 Israeli fans attended despite warnings from Israeli authorities to stay away.

On the field, France’s attack lacked precision, and it wasn’t until the 20th minute that captain N’Golo Kante forced the first save from Israel’s goalkeeper Daniel Peretz.

France dominated possession and fired 25 shots on goal, but Peretz was only tested twice in the second half, first saving from Warren Zaire-Emery, then from Christopher Nkunku in added time.

France’s frustration was evident, with fullback Jules Kounde expressing anger and frustration after the match, though he acknowledged the positive of securing qualification.

Despite the draw, France remain in contention to top their group, trailing Italy by three points.

A win over Italy in Milan on Sunday could see them take first place in the group.

Coach Didier Deschamps admitted his side could have done more but was satisfied with getting the necessary result against a defensive Israel team.
