Professional footballer Jay Emmanuel-Thomas has been charged in connection with an alleged attempt to smuggle £600,000 worth of cannabis through Stansted Airport.

The striker was arrested by National Crime Agency (NCA) officers at his home in Gourock, Inverclyde, on Wednesday morning.

The arrest follows the seizure of approximately 60kg of cannabis by Border Force officers on September 2.

The drugs were found in two suitcases arriving on a flight from Bangkok, Thailand.

Emmanuel-Thomas is expected to face Carlisle Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, accused of importing Class B drugs.

The incident also involved two other women, aged 28 and 32, who also faced charges and are scheduled for court on October 1.

The NCA continues to issue warnings to travelers about the severe consequences of drug smuggling, emphasizing that the maximum penalty for bringing cannabis into the UK can lead to a 14-year prison sentence.

NCA senior officer David Phillips warned that travelers from countries like Thailand, Canada, and the U.S. are increasingly being targeted for cannabis smuggling, with seizures this year tripling compared to 2023.

Despite being told they might only face fines, couriers are at risk of severe penalties.
