Former Italy and Juventus striker Salvatore “Totò” Schillaci has sadly passed away at the age of 59.
The Palermo native had been hospitalized earlier this month due to illness and died overnight.
The news of his passing was confirmed by his former club, Inter Milan, early this morning.
Schillaci will forever be etched in the memories of football fans, particularly Irish supporters, as he was the man who ended Ireland’s remarkable performance in the 1990 World Cup quarter-finals.
His winning goal effectively knocked Ireland out of the tournament, bringing an end to their best run in a major competition.
In that iconic tournament, Schillaci emerged as the top scorer, netting six goals, showcasing his incredible talent on the world stage.
After spending much of his early career in the lower tiers of Italian football, Schillaci made the jump to the Serie A giants, Juventus, in 1988.
During his time there, he contributed significantly to the club’s success, helping them clinch the Coppa Italia and UEFA Cup in the 1989-90 season.
He later won another UEFA Cup with Inter Milan four years later. Schillaci retired from football in 1999 after a stint in Japan’s J-League.
Schillaci was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2022 but had recovered after undergoing extensive treatment.
His former club Juventus paid tribute, remembering him for his passion and the energy he brought to every game.
