England right-back Kieran Trippier has announced his retirement from international football.
Over a seven-year international career, Trippier earned 54 caps for England, playing a key role in four major tournaments, including England’s run to the final of Euro 2024.
Trippier took to Instagram to share his decision with fans. “I never thought as a young lad from Bury that I would play for my country let alone achieve 54 caps,” he wrote.
“It’s been one of the biggest honours of my life to represent my country at 4 major tournaments.”
Trippier made his announcement just before interim manager Lee Carsley was due to name his first England squad.
With upcoming matches against Ireland and Finland in the UEFA Nations League, Trippier’s absence will be felt, especially given his versatility to play as both right-back and left-back.
England will also miss his experience and leadership, particularly with Luke Shaw injured.
In his farewell message, the 33-year-old also thanked his teammates for unforgettable moments, including reaching two Euro finals and a World Cup semi-final, and expressed confidence that the team would eventually win a major tournament.
He extended his best wishes to interim manager Lee Carsley, the coaching staff, and the team, while also showing his appreciation to England fans for their unwavering support.
