Despite claims to the contrary, Bruno Fernandes has denied asking to be taken off the pitch during Manchester United’s devastating defeat against Liverpool.
The Red Devils had been enjoying a fantastic run of form, coming off of their Carabao Cup win against Newcastle in Wembley that ended a six-year trophy drought.
However, the team’s fortunes took a sharp turn when they faced Erik ten Hag’s Liverpool side in Anfield for a Premier League match that saw them suffer a crushing 7-0 loss.
Midway through the second half, Fernandes was seen by some fans gesticulating towards the United bench as Anthony Elanga prepared to replace Marcus Rashford.
This led to rumors that Fernandes had requested to be subbed out of the game.
However, the Portuguese midfielder has since clarified that he had only sought clarification on his playing position after Elanga was brought on.
The subbing on of Elanga ultimately made no difference for United, who continued to lose ground and conceded more goals without scoring any themselves.
In an unrelated incident after their Carabao Cup win, Casemiro confronted Fernandes about what appeared to be a lost opportunity during the match.
