China’s crackdown on football corruption has reached new heights with 43 individuals banned for life over match-fixing, bribery, and other misconduct.

A two-year investigation revealed 120 fixed matches, involving 128 suspects and 41 clubs, according to state news agency Xinhua.

Among those banned were 38 players and five club officials, including former Chinese internationals Jin Jingdao, Guo Tianyu, and Gu Chao, as well as South Korean player Son Jun-ho, who played for Shandong Taishan FC.

Son was accused of severely violating sports ethics, causing a significant societal impact.

After being detained for 10 months in China, he was released in March and returned to South Korea.

In addition to the lifetime bans, 17 individuals, including foreign players attracted to China by high salaries, received five-year suspensions.

The announcement was made before a World Cup qualifier in Dalian, where China was set to face Saudi Arabia following a humiliating 7-0 loss to Japan in Asian qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.

Despite President Xi Jinping’s ambitions to make China a football superpower, the national team’s performance remains poor.

Ranked 87th by FIFA and having only qualified for the World Cup once, China still faces a difficult path to qualifying, even with an expanded 48-team tournament.
