Nigeria’s unbeaten run in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers came to a shocking end with a 2-1 loss to Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium.
Samuel Chukwueze’s brilliant solo goal put the Super Eagles ahead midway through the second half, but Rwanda mounted an impressive comeback to secure their first-ever victory over Nigeria.
The match began with both teams testing each other, but Nigeria struggled to create clear chances.
Kelechi Iheanacho’s shot was blocked early on, and Victor Boniface missed a golden opportunity after Moses Simon’s cross.
Despite dominating possession, the Super Eagles failed to break down Rwanda’s defence.
Rwanda grew into the game and tested Nigeria’s defence, with goalkeeper Maduka Okoye saving a few dangerous crosses.
After the break, coach Augustine Eguavoen made two changes, introducing Frank Onyeka and Chukwueze, and the latter’s individual brilliance in the 58th minute gave Nigeria the lead.
However, Rwanda responded with two quick goals in the 71st and 73rd minutes.
Ange Mutsinzi headed in from a free-kick, and Innocent Nshuti flicked in a cross at the near post to complete the turnaround.
Despite late pressure from Nigeria, including substitutions of Victor Osimhen and Sadiq Umar, the Super Eagles couldn’t find an equalizer.
The win was not enough to help Rwanda qualify and the defeat did not affect Nigeria’s spot in the AFCON qualifying group standings.
The two teams will meet again in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
