Brazil were held to a 1-1 draw by Venezuela in a tense World Cup qualifier on Thursday, as substitute Telasco Segovia’s quick strike in the second half canceled out Raphinha’s opener.
Despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances, Brazil were unable to secure the win.
The match saw both teams register 11 goal attempts each, with Brazil enjoying over 60% of possession but often exposed to counterattacks.
Vinicius Jr was a constant threat, hitting the post in the 20th minute, and Raphinha put Brazil ahead just before halftime with a stunning left-footed free kick that ricocheted off the post into the net.
It was Brazil’s first free-kick goal in World Cup qualifiers in 19 years.
However, Venezuela responded quickly after the break, with Segovia striking a powerful shot from the edge of the box just 38 seconds into the second half, assisted by Jefferson Savarino, to level the game.
Brazil had a chance to retake the lead in the 62nd minute when Vinicius was fouled inside the box by goalkeeper Rafael Romo.
But Vinicius missed the resulting penalty, and his rebound effort went wide of the open goal.
